Question for quilters

I have been debating a quilt backing choice in my head and I would like to get others opinions on the matter.  I have my 12 Days of Christmas quilts (well, blocks) and I'm getting ready to sew those blocks into rows (finally!).  I wanted to back the quilt with something snuggly and I was thinking either minky or chenille.  Yay or Nay?  What say you?  Too much of a pain in the you-know-what?  If I were to send the quilt out to be quilted with the minky or chenille backing, would you long arm quilters bundle it all back up and send it back to me without touching it swearing at me in the process?

I just want to know if that could be an option or not.  If not, I'm going to go with a flannel backing.  I just like the feel of minky and thought it would be fun for a quilt back.

Give me your thoughts.  I really want to hear them!

Enjoy your day!
Jen

  1. I have a long arm machine and have quilted two quilts with minky on the The minky will definitely make it soft and cuddly!

    Good luck!

  3. Oops! Somehow left out half my answer! On one quilt we used just the minky and on the second one we also used batting. The one without the batting was a bit floppy for my taste.

  4. I have never used minky on the long arm, but then I am really just a long arm beginner. I do believe the lady whose long arm I rent time on has done quilts with minky and other cozy fabric as the backing with no excessive use of bad language involved! Go for it!

  5. I use flannel when I want a snuggy warm quilt Jen. As much as I like minky... I don't like poly. (I think I'm allergic)hehe

  6. I've never used minky, and don't think I would at home, but I've heard its wonderfully soft and cuddly. I put fleece on the back of my 12 days and it is A-MAZE-ING. So warm and cozy! I quilted that one myself and it was tough, but so worth it!

  7. Hi!
If the fabric is stretchy, it is a loose weave, plus the stretch of the fabric. I like a really good quality flannel, with lots of nap (soft stuff). Over time, the minky or fleece will either stretch or shrink (fleece) and then distort your lovely quilt and all your hard work!
    Good luck, take care, Leslie

  9. I use a good quilter's flannel when I want warm and cuddly back. I sewed a baby quilt with chenille and hated it. Found you end up with fluff everywhere..including up your nose!!

  10. I've quilted a few kids quilts with minkee on the back and I loved it. I didn't use a longarm though. They were quilted on my regular sewing machine. I thought the quilts turned great, but I don't know how well it would work on a longarm. Minkee is stretchy, but it didn't seem to be a problem. The quilts are still in use with no troubles. However, these quilts weren't complicated, so I can't really comment on the distortion that someone else mentioned since mine are well loved, simple block quilts. They may be slightly distorted and I just haven't noticed since the blocks weren't detailed in the first place. I've used lots of flannel before too and loved it!

  11. I've used Minky twice. The first time I FMQ on my reqular sewing machine - it was tough but it was also the first time. The recipient of that quilt loves it and says it is the only one they use for their baby. The second time I put it on the frame and also used batting. That quilt has become the favorite of all the ones I have made for my grandchildren :-)

I'd say go for it - it is super soft and worth the effort if you are going to FMQ. Longarmers should not have a problem - I have only been doing quilts on the frame for about 6 months and don't have much experience.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Blessings,
    Darlene

  12. So glad you asked Jen. I thought Minky was Minky and had some that I don't remember where I got it and chose it for the back of Birdie Stitches. You know this quilt is one of my favorites. Well, my LAQ says the Minky wouldn't go on her frame and was wonky. She was going to give it back to me, but I'm going to make a quilter's cotton backing that matches the quilt (Fandango) when I get home.
    Good Luck.

  13. First of all, congrats that you got the BOM put together. I have all of my blocks done and the finishing kit. Minky has those bumps....super cuddly, but would the bumps interfer with the quilting?

  14. I haven't used Minkee on any of my quilts, but I don't think that I could on my frame. It would probably end up taking up too much space on a decent size quilt. :(

  15. I'm not a sewer so I had to google "minky". It sounds wonderful! But I'm kind of a flannel girl myself :o)
