Answer Me This...

I don't have a big fabric stash. I barely have scraps. I buy fabric with a purpose in mind right then and there. So, when I see fabric I really, really like but have no immediate plans for it and want to stash it away... how much do I buy?!

1/2 yard, 1 yard, 10 yards?? I'm curious to hear everyones answers to this question. I've talked to other sew/quilting people and they gave me their opinion. What do you do? Reason I ask is that I've seen lots of pretty fabric choices out there and I want to get some to keep and use at a later date in some sort of project but I have no idea how much to get to be "safe".

Can you give me some insight to my question?

Thanks!!
Enjoy your day!
Jen

  1. My answer usually depends on how much cash I have at the time. :o) Having said that, I usually buy a yard. If I see it as a fantastic border print, 3 yards if I can afford it.

  2. I am a fabric collector....sad, but true. I tell my quilting students that if you are just collecting 1/3 yd is a nice size for piecing and applique.
If you can afford more...go for it!!! 2yds gives you enough for a nice border. Enjoy and shop til you drop!!! XXX Annelies

  3. A lot of times I buy 1 jelly roll and 1.5 yards of border fabric. There are some terrific jelly roll books out there. If I do fats...I do up to 12. If I do half yards, I buy at least 6 (that is 12 fats). I think it is great you use what you buy right then, on the other hand. If I think I might like a bag or purse, I buy a total of 2 yards.

  4. I sew/quilt a lot! I use to follow the 1/3 rule but for a "main player" type of fabric I like to buy 1/2 yards so that I have lots of options. If it is a fabric that could be a good border or good background piece I purchase 2 yards.

  5. Hahaha! Great question. I've stepped up from 1/4 yard pieces to 1/2 yard pieces. Half of the time. The other half of the time, I'll get 1 yard or more -- just depends on how much I love the fabric.

I've learned one thing though -- no matter what you decide -- It Won't Be Enough. I have a fair sized stash and it drives me crazy -- when I want to make something, I don't have the fabric that I want. How Can That Be????

  6. I used to buy 1 yard because that would give me enough for pretty much any sort of dress for Olivia...but now that she's wearing a 6x (usually calls for 1&1/4 yards), I'm having the same problem as Thimbleanna. Who would have thought?
