I'll have to re-write my post from yesterday on my 12 Days of Christmas BOM but for right now, I would like to share my Bliss disappearing 9 patch blocks with you. I have 25 blocks pieced and I was going to make more but I think 24 is going to be plenty for my new idea; well, until I measure things that's my thought.
Before I tell you my idea... here are a couple of snapshots of the block (please ignore all clutter in the background)
Now for my idea. Our bedroom gets a bit chilly in the winter. My husband needs to look at the heating duct work and figure out what he can do to fix that. We have an outdoor wood boiler that heats our house and it is located at the opposite end from our bedroom. For whatever reason, the heat just isn't strong on our bedroom side of the house. Like you all needed to know that. ANYway... I was going to have these blocks become a traditional quilt but I have since decided to make a duvet cover for our feather duvet insert.
I've been looking online to get some ideas on how to construct this duvet cover but everything I ran into pretty much just uses two sheets so here are my thoughts. Tell me what you think.
I have decided to back the completed top with a solid and do some (very light) quilting. Reason is this, I don't want to see my block seams. I want to believe that if I do this, it will help with washing and drying. For the backing, I'm leaning towards Bliss flannel OR that Moda Snuggle fleece. Just for extra warmth. The fleece may be too much with the feather duvet so I'm still kicking the idea around in my head. But it would be so snuggly!
My next steps are to sash the blocks but more importantly, find my other duvet covers that are hiding in this house somewhere and measure them to make sure I have enough blocks and figure out how wide of a border to add. And to figure out how to actually finish the open duvet end.
I'm excited to do this. I hope it comes out as well as it looks in my head.
Have a great day!

Sounds like a good idea Jen! Love the blocks so far - they are so easy aren't they? Are you putting sashing inbetween each block? That will be nice. I always just jam mine all together - tends to make your eyes a little nervous though I guess. Anyway - sounds like a good plan to me!! Jenn
ReplyDeleteOh I like your idea of making this into a duvet cover! I would add borders and quilt it, like you said. It will look lovely and be nice and warm!
ReplyDeleteI saw your post yesterday but was having blogger trouble too. I'm glad I didn't try to post. I haven't written a post for over a week and thought about it last night but ran out of time. I've had nothing interesting to say lately anyway haha.
Hope you have a great weekend!
I've made a duvet cover before. Not all fancy like with the quilted top but with two sheets. How I did the top was just to make it like a pillow sham and used snaps to keep it together, but you could do it on the backing side. You could use snaps or maybe even ties. You could make it open at the botton and then do the snaps on the insides of the fabric. Like make a hem on the bottom (or top) and put the snaps on the inside, does that make sense? So then you wouldn't see the snaps from either side. But that might make it weird at the opening, but you wouldn't have to do it the whole width of the cover. Sorry for such a lengthy explanation.. It will be awesome no matter what you do!!
ReplyDeletethis is lovely Jen,hope it works out for you as it is a lovely top, well done
ReplyDeleteJen, that sounds great!!! I would definitely consider the flannel backing, so cuddly!! Another idea is to make the quilt, flannel back it and lay it over the duvet. Too funny that this is another thing we have in common :) My king size quilt will replace my duvet in the summer and go on top of it in the winter :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for your Bliss Jen! You could just use Muslin to back the blocks and batting layer to cut down on cost and then use your choice for backing. My thought is the down comforter would be warm enough without fleece. You'll figure it out.
ReplyDeleteIv'e made P/work into duvet covers before and I favour a button hole closure . It's very pretty--cottonreel
ReplyDeleteGreat blocks! I will be no help whatsoever for the duvet cover though. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea...I think backing it and doing some light quilting will help. I really do! Love the blocks. You are on a roll. Love those Christmas BOMS too. And, what a fun find at your moms. :)
ReplyDeleteNo matter how often I see Bliss and how busy the prints are, I still love the way they all go together no matter what! That is beautiful!
