Let's fast forward to this year, shall we? Earlier in the spring, Amelia got it in her head that she need her "own" garden. Daddy and Amelia went to get more chicks and she talked him into getting her some flower seeds: marigolds, wildflowers, sunflowers and something else. I dreaded the idea but Daddy busted out the big equipment and dug out an area for his little girl and the planting began.
She was very good about making sure the seeds got watered and she weeded at first and then the idea got boring. The flowers were left to fend for themselves. The weeds took over and the other flowers got choked but the sunflowers grew and grew. Deer are known to love the plant so I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Thankfully, all of Chris' machinery is in this general area so I think it keeps the deer away.
I didn't think they would ever flower. Then this morning, I looked out our bathroom window and guess what I saw?!
A SUNFLOWER!!
There are about 11 more that will hopefully bloom. I am so happy for her. She is really excited. I have decided that next year in this spot, it will be our sunflower patch and we'll plant double or even triple what she planted this year. I will make sure that we keep up with the weeding. ;)

ReplyDeleteWe used to have beautiful climbing roses that were the envy of our neighborhood :-) People would stop to ask what we fed them, how often we watered, etc. Guess what? We didn't feed them and watered them when and if we thought about it. They were stunning around the arches of the front of our home. I think they thrived just to be defiant. LOL
And what a beautiful sunflower it is too! I didn't plant any this year and I should have, because they're one of my favorite flowers! :0)

ReplyDeleteWow, those are great sunflowers. My daughter planted sunflowers at our house when she was about 5 and they grew as tall as the second-storey windows. It was amazing! Mine still haven't bloomed this year...yet.
ReplyDeleteSo, you had Punkie a year after you got married? Ha! My daughter's 20th birthday is on Monday, and our 21st anniversary is next Friday. Fast work, eh?
How fun! Daddy's will do anything for their little girls, won't they? Maybe Amelia will get into the weeding next year now that she knows what can happen.
ReplyDeleteAmelia must be so proud! :-) We didn't have any this season. They self-seed so most of the time they just come up themselves. We renovated the planting bed so I should have planted seeds. Oh well next year! They're so pretty and grow so fast!
